Use a supported Garmin autopilot
BoatKit can show the connection state, current mode, and target heading reported by a supported Garmin autopilot. With administrator access, you can engage heading hold, place the autopilot in standby, adjust its target heading, or request Follow Route when route guidance is ready.
The autopilot communicates with BoatKit through NMEA 2000, the vessel's onboard marine electronics network.
Autopilot commands can change the vessel's heading. Maintain a proper watch, confirm commands on the autopilot's approved control display, and be ready to select Standby or use the manufacturer's controls immediately.
Supported equipment
BoatKit's current Garmin autopilot integration has been verified aboard with a Garmin Reactor 40 installation.
This is not an exhaustive compatibility list. Behavior can depend on the exact Garmin components and firmware aboard your vessel. Confirm monitoring and every control you intend to use with your own equipment and follow Garmin's operating procedures.
Before you start
You need:
- An installed and commissioned Garmin autopilot connected to an NMEA 2000 network that BoatKit can access
- A current connection from the Garmin autopilot, observed by BoatKit
- Administrator access to BoatKit for helm controls
- For Follow Route, a valid active route that has finished calculating and BoatKit route guidance configured for the autopilot's NMEA 2000 network
This guide covers operation of an existing installation. Use the Garmin installation documentation for physical wiring and commissioning.
Open the autopilot tool
- Confirm that the autopilot is available on its Garmin control display.
- Wait for BoatKit to observe a current connection from the autopilot.
- Open Tools > Autopilot.
The dedicated tool uses the first available autopilot.
To keep an autopilot panel in a saved view instead:
- Add an Autopilot view item.
- Open the view item's configuration.
- Under Autopilot source, select First available autopilot or choose a specific observed unit.
Choosing a specific unit is useful on a vessel with more than one observed autopilot. If that unit is unavailable, the saved view waits for the selected autopilot rather than switching to another one.
Engage heading hold and adjust the heading
The large mode control shows the autopilot's reported state, such as Standby, Engaged, or Track.
- Confirm that the autopilot shows a current connection and an available mode.
- While it is in standby, select the large mode control to request heading hold.
- Confirm the engaged mode and target heading on the Garmin control display.
- While the autopilot is actively steering, use −10°, −1°, +1°, or +10° to adjust the target heading.
- Select the large mode control again when you need to request Standby.
Heading-adjustment actions remain unavailable while the autopilot is in standby or disconnected. Engaging the autopilot and entering standby are deliberate administrator-only helm actions.
Follow a BoatKit route
BoatKit can broadcast route guidance using vendor-neutral NMEA 2000 messages. This route-guidance output is not Garmin-specific. See Send a BoatKit route to an autopilot to select the output network and configure turn-transition behavior.
Requesting Garmin's route-following mode is a separate, Garmin-specific helm command.
When a valid active route has finished calculating, the autopilot view divides the engage area into two controls:
- The larger control retains the normal heading-hold or standby action.
- The smaller Follow Route control requests Garmin's route-following mode.
Follow Route remains disabled until BoatKit is successfully transmitting valid route guidance on the selected autopilot's own NMEA 2000 network.
To start following a route:
- Make a valid route active and wait for its calculation to finish.
- Confirm that BoatKit is transmitting route guidance on the autopilot's NMEA 2000 network.
- Select Follow Route.
- Check the mode and course on the autopilot's approved control display, and follow any instructions shown there.
The Garmin autopilot remains responsible for steering response and executing turns. Do not treat the BoatKit button state alone as confirmation that the autopilot accepted the request.
Confirm it is working
Check the following observable results:
- The autopilot view shows a current connection instead of Disconnected.
- The displayed mode agrees with the Garmin control display.
- After engaging heading hold, BoatKit shows a target heading and the Garmin display confirms the selected course.
- A heading adjustment changes the target by the selected amount and is reflected on the Garmin display.
- After Follow Route, the Garmin display confirms the route-following mode and intended course. BoatKit may show Track or Following Route after the request is accepted.
Continue monitoring the vessel and autopilot throughout operation.
Operation without an internet connection
Garmin autopilot monitoring and controls run locally aboard the vessel. They continue to work without BoatKit Cloud while the BoatKit vessel runtime and its NMEA 2000 connection remain active.
Troubleshooting
BoatKit does not show the autopilot
- Confirm that the Garmin control display shows the autopilot system as available.
- Confirm that BoatKit's connection to the relevant NMEA 2000 network is active.
- Wait for BoatKit to receive a current status from the Garmin autopilot.
- If a saved view says it is waiting for the selected autopilot, check Autopilot source. Select the intended observed unit or use First available autopilot.
Engage, standby, or heading controls are unavailable
- Confirm that you have administrator access. Helm commands are not available to read-only users.
- Confirm that the autopilot is connected and reporting a current, recognized mode.
- For heading adjustments, confirm that the autopilot is actively steering. The adjustment controls are unavailable in standby.
- If BoatKit reports a command error, correct the reported connection or operating-state problem before trying again.
Follow Route does not appear
Confirm that there is an active route with at least two route points and that BoatKit has finished calculating it.
Follow Route appears but is disabled
- Confirm that the active route is valid and resolve any route validation or clearance warning.
- Confirm that BoatKit route guidance is transmitting on the selected autopilot's own NMEA 2000 network.
- Review the network selection and troubleshooting steps described in Send a BoatKit route to an autopilot.
- Confirm that you have administrator access and that the Garmin autopilot connection is current.
Use the normal BoatKit status and the manufacturer's approved displays when testing. Live-network packet injection is not an ordinary installation or troubleshooting step.
